那么什么样的推荐信才是被各个高校的招生委员会所青睐的呢？素研实验室从本期开始，每周一更解读世界高校喜欢的推荐信标准。

 

宾夕法尼亚大学（University ofPennsylvania），简称宾大（UPenn），作为美国第一所从事科学技术和人文教育的现代高等学校，美洲大学协会的12个创始校之一，及NCAA体育赛事联盟常春藤盟校的成员，同时也是美国最古老的高等教育机构之一，他们在看申请学生推荐信的时候最看重的是什么呢？我们在这篇文章重点分析一下在标化成绩、竞赛之外，非常能体现个人素质、技能和经历的部分：推荐信。

 

 

在宾大的本科生申请的官方主页中，关于推荐信的部分是这样阐述的：“宾大需要两封来自高中任课老师的推荐信，最好是11年级或者12年级的主课任课老师。我们非常注重高中任课老师老师对申请者的评价。所以，请选择非常了解申请者的老师，同时这位老师需要与申请者共事过。高中老师的推荐信帮助我们了解申请者在学校课堂中是怎样的人，以及在宾夕法尼亚大学有可能成为怎样的人。推荐信能让我们了解申请者的品德、课程参与度、团队协作能力以及班级人际交往能力等信息。

 

  Through these letters, we can better appreciatethe kind of student you have been in the classroom, which helps us understandthe kind of a student you may be at Penn. Letters also give us a story behindthe grade, providing us with information about work ethic, class participation,collaboration, and interactions with classmates. Penn requires two teacher recommendations, ideally instructors from your junior or senior year in major academic subjects. We take teacher observations seriously,and pay close attention to what your teachers say about you. 官网还贴心地告诉推荐者推荐信的注意事项。获得申请者感兴趣的领域的老师的推荐信对申请成功比较有帮助。不建议申请者提交两位来自同一学科的高中老师的推荐信。最好的推荐信应该来自于最了解申请者的老师，而不是那些给申请者成绩最高的老师。记得在截止日期前向老师索要推荐信，这样老师才能留出充足的时间来回想你在课堂上的表现。也可以给老师提交一份简历，简历里包括申请者在课堂上做过的作业以及成绩单，或者是申请者在课堂上讨论过的课程课题的简介，这样方便推荐老师可以快速回想起你的出色表现。

 

- It can behelpful to obtain a recommendation from a teacher in your area of acadmic interest.

- You don’tneed to get one letter from a science/math teacher and one from a humanitiesteacher, although you are welcome to do that. We don’t recommend that yousubmit letters from instructors of the same subject. A letter from a mathteacher and one from a science teacher, for example, is acceptable. Likewise, aletter from a history teacher and one from an English teacher. Letters from twodifferent math teachers, however, are not recommended.

- The bestletters come from the teachers who know you well, not necessarily the ones whogave you the best grade.

- Be sure to ask for recommendations well in advance of the deadline to allow yourteachers time to reflect on their experiences with you in the classroom.

- Providingyour teachers with a resume, a list of the projects and assignments you didwhile in their class, or a favorite topic that was discussed in class, can helpthem remember all of your great work.

宾大很重视学生是否有自己喜欢的专业，同时非常重视高中老师对于学生的评价。

 

官网上仍然提到了关于额外的推荐信的注意事项。大多数申请了宾大的学生都不会提交额外材料，因为对于申请需要很重要的信息，都已经包含在了其他必要文件中了。确实有学生能够从额外的资料中获益，但我们建议你提交额外资料前请考虑清楚，因为很多情况下，太多的额外文件反而会弄巧成拙降低使你的申请竞争力。简而言之，真要提交的话一定从简提交文件。

 

Most students who are admitted to Penn do not submit supplemental materials. All of the information that we feel is crucial in making an admission decision isincluded within our required documents. While there are some students who may benefit from including additional information,we recommend that you think very carefully before sending in supplementary material. 之后，官网也提议了关于额外推荐信的注意事项。 如同前文所说，我们需要两封推荐信来了解你在学校的表现，但如果你想要提交第三封推荐信，这封信最好不要再来自你的高中任课老师了。一封有效的额外推荐信可以来自于你的运动教练，你的实习或者研究主管，你的兼职上司，或者是当地的神职人员。但是，除非来自这些人员非常了解你个人并写出申请者额外的特别的地方，这封信件才是有效的。你的家人或者朋友写的推荐信并不能给我们对你的评估提供有用的信息。

 

- Penn requires two letters of recommendation from academic teachers, which allows the Admissions Committee to understand a student's presence and impact in theclassroom and school community. If you would like to submit another letter of recommendation beyond this requirement, we strongly recommend that it is notfrom another academic teacher.
- Examplesof an appropriate recommender include an athletic coach, internship or research supervisor, boss at a part-time job, or local clergy member.
- These additional recommendations are only helpful if the recommender knows youpersonally and can write specifically about you.
- Letters from family members or close family friends traditionally do not provideinformation that’s helpful to the evaluation process.

 

总结

跟其他的学校不同，宾大不建议学生提交额外的申请材料，而且认为过多的申请材料可能会减弱申请学生的竞争力。

同时，宾大也说了，如果你想要提交一份额外的推荐信，这封信最好来自于你的你的运动教练，你的实习或者科研工作的主管，你的兼职上司，或者是当地的神职人员，他们要写出你的特别的地方，亲人或者朋友的推荐信一般是无效的
